Concrete Slabs - Design Practices

An example of a slab on a concrete bridge

When a slab's length is more than twice it's width (l > 2w) then the slab can be considered a one-way slab. A one way slab will only have significant bending moments in the short direction.

When the ratio between the long to short side doesn't exceed 2, a two-way slab is present. This slab will have significant bending acting in both directions. Because of that, two-way slabs are more difficult to design than one-way.
