Field Measurement

This is a term often used in construction. So many things need to be measured in the field to verify compliance with the drawings. With respect to earthwork, this means measurement of the volume of earth to be cut or filled, or both cut and filled. We’ll talk more about this in a few sections when we cover volume of a pile of soil. These piles are most often cones, like the one below.

Simple Way to Understand a Volume

Cross sections taken at regular intervals of the area to be cut or filled helps the contractor understand how much dirt is coming or leaving. Sometimes, additional cut sections are necessary between the regular intervals if the existing profile of the earth changes drastically. This means a sharp drop or rise in the profile that is different from the typical slope in this area.
